Do you remember the moment you discovered something that changed how you live? A hobby that brought energy, joy, or a new sense of purpose? For Moorings Park Grande Lake resident Bill Follit, that moment arrived in 2017 when his brother placed a paddle in his hand and introduced him to the fast-paced, laughter-filled game of pickleball.
“It didn’t take long before we were hooked,” Bill recalled. “The game was easy to learn and instantly engaging. Since then, my wife Evelyn and I have played wherever we could, from taped-up parking lots to Har-Tru tennis courts and eventually on regulation courts.”
What began as a casual game quickly became much more. It became a pathway to wellness, new friendships, and even championship competitions; a reflection of what makes life at Moorings Park Communities so special.
Pickleball may have started as a backyard game in 1965, but in recent years it has grown into a national phenomenon. Nowhere is that more evident than in Naples, Florida, affectionately known as the Pickleball Capital of the World. With world-class courts, a thriving community, and a calendar filled with tournaments, the game brings people together in a way that few pastimes can.
What makes pickleball special isn’t just the sport itself, but its accessibility. It welcomes players of all generations and skill levels, creating a natural way to stay active, meet new people, and embrace a lifestyle of wellness. For older adults in particular, it offers a joyful and sustainable path to staying healthy and connected.
“I never thought I’d say this, but as long as I can walk, I’m playing pickleball. I can’t wait to get back on the court,” said former professional tennis player Andre Agassi.
“To me, successful aging means maintaining your health and vitality so you can enjoy life to the fullest,” said Follit. “Pickleball combines three of the most important ingredients: physical activity, social connection, and mental engagement. But the emotional and mental lift? That’s the best part. My outlook on life has never been better.”
At Moorings Park Communities, that philosophy is woven into every experience, from thoughtfully designed amenities and enriching programs to the vibrant, wellness-driven lifestyle that encourages residents to thrive. Pickleball isn’t just recreation; it’s a tangible expression of Moorings Park Communities’ mission to create opportunities for growth, connection, and vitality at every stage of life.
In April, Bill competed in the 2025 Minto US Open Pickleball Championships at the National Pickleball Center in East Naples Community Park. Residents, partners, and team members from Moorings Park Communities came out in full force to cheer him and his Senior Pro Doubles partner, Gerald Beland, as they took on the best in the sport.
“The support from Moorings Park was incredible,” said Follit. “Residents, partners, and even our Executive Director, Celeste Lynch, came out to cheer us on. Everyone wore matching T-shirts, generously provided by Moorings Park, so you could spot our cheering section instantly. Every point we won was met with loud applause. It was energizing.”
Bill and Gerald played through each match with focus and resilience, ultimately earning the bronze medal.
“When we won the final point, it was pure exhilaration,” he shared. “Evelyn rushed over and gave me a victory kiss. We were surrounded by hugs, cheers, and a shared sense of joy. It’s a moment I’ll never forget.”
Moorings Park Communities is proud to be home to residents who embody what it means to age successfully. Their stories shape the culture of each campus and inspire new opportunities for others to thrive.
“When Bill and Evelyn moved to Moorings Park Grande Lake, they immediately began looking for pickleball opportunities,” said Jessica Brinkert, Executive Director of Successful Aging. “With strong support from management and a generous donor, three new pickleball courts were added to the expanded athletic area at Moorings Park. These spaces were intentionally designed to support every pillar of wellness.”
“Pickleball is a fantastic example of how purposeful design and programming can support successful aging,” Brinkert continued. “Bill is engaged, active, and deeply connected to his community. His enthusiasm and leadership inspire others to embrace aging as a time of growth and opportunity.”
With the addition of these new courts, interest in pickleball is growing across all three Moorings Park campuses, and for good reason. Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the country, with an expected compound annual growth rate of 11.3% through 2028. That means there’s always someone to play with, not just within Moorings Park Communities, but across Naples and the entire country.
Bill now hosts introductory clinics for residents of all skill levels, creating a welcoming space to learn, play, and connect.
“I’m optimistic that our new courts will inspire more residents to give pickleball a try,” said Follit. “No matter your skill level, there’s someone to play with. The progress I’ve seen in new players is remarkable. Many have told me how proud they are of what they’ve accomplished, and I feel the same way.”
Looking ahead, Bill has his sights set on competing again at the US Open in 2026, this time aiming even higher. But for him, the greatest reward isn’t the medal. It’s the shared laughter, connection, and vitality the game brings.
“Pickleball may be just a game,” he said, “but it’s also a reminder of how good life can be when you stay active, stay connected, and keep growing.”
