The Importance of Staying Social as We Age

January 27, 2020

firepit-selfieWhile you may be aware of the importance of staying physically active as you age to maintain your physical and mental health, did you know that staying socially active is equally important to your overall health?

Several studies have suggested that there is a positive correlation between social interaction and improved health. Here are just a few of the reasons why it is important that you stay socially active in your retirement years.

1. Maintain Cognitive Functions

As we age, it is important that we maintain social interactions in order to keep us sharp and mentally engaged. Isolation can leave us more susceptible to developing dementia or Alzheimer's disease as well as anxiety, depression and increased feelings of loneliness.

2. Improve Your Physical Health

Remaining socially active has also been shown to benefit physical health as well by improving immune system functions, reducing the likelihood of developing a potentially life-threatening illness.

Studies have also found that seniors who are socially active tend to be more physically active and maintain better eating habits, which can help in lowering blood pressure and cholesterol while reducing your risk of developing heart problems.

3. Enjoy Better Sleep

Good, restful sleep has proved to be related to improved physical, mental, and emotional health. Unfortunately, many people as they age, find themselves struggling with difficulty in sleeping.

And while it may seem a bit of a stretch, if you have been finding it harder and harder to get a good night's sleep, then you may want to take a look at your social life. It is widely accepted that people who have more fulfilling relationships and are socially active tend to sleep better and consequently.

4. Increased Longevity

Considering the benefits of social interaction among seniors previously discussed, it should come as no surprise that staying socially active can actually help you to live longer as well. Maintaining an active social life can help you to achieve better physical and mental health, which can lead to a longer, happier, healthier life. So go ahead and join a club, spend more time with your friends and your family, or volunteer in your local community. You’ll soon discover that you’re living the life you love in a way you may not have thought possible.
