Whether you want to relax in the pool, enjoy an outdoor art show, play a round of golf, or head out on your boat for the day, The Sunshine State has a plethora of outdoor activities to keep you busy during the summer.

The summer months bring thoughts of warmth and sun, and there are actually many benefits of sunlight. Vitamin D boosts the immune system and can improve bone strength. Sunlight also reduces depression and stress, and can help you get a better night's sleep. However, there is no denying that prolonged exposure to the sun can cause damage to the skin. Fortunately, there are several simple steps you can take to reap the benefits of sunshine while also keeping your skin looking fresh and feeling healthy despite the heat and humidity.

1. Wear Your Sunscreen When Enjoying the Outdoors

One of the best ways to protect your skin during the summer is to wear sunscreen. Ultraviolet (UV) rays are a significant risk factor for a variety of skin cancers, and they also cause wrinkling and sunspots. To reduce the risk of sun damage, choose a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends using a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Your sunscreen should be water-resistant, which will continue to protect you on the beach and by the pool.  You should apply at least one (1) ounce of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before you head outside. Just remember to reapply every two hours, or after enjoying a dip in the water.

2. Protect Your Lips with Lip Balm

Although many people remember sunscreen, lip balm sometimes gets overlooked. A quality lip balm will keep your lips moisturized and protect them from the heat or wind. Look for products with an SPF of 15 or higher for UV protection. Lip balm should be applied frequently just like sunscreen - at least every two hours. For anyone that chooses to wear lipstick, darker shades provide more UV defense, but you can also find varieties with SPF as well.

3. Dress for Success in Light Layers

Dressing for success applies outside of the business world, too. Wearing light layers is another simple way to protect most of your body from sun exposure. Some simple tips for dressing to protect your skin from the sun:

  • Choose clothing with an ultraviolet protection factor (UPF)
  • Wear lightweight long sleeves and long pants or skirts
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat
  • Sunglasses with UV protection

4. Schedule Your Day with Shade

The sun is strongest from about 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, so it is often recommended to avoid the outdoors during this time frame. You can still enjoy your favorite activities by scheduling them around these times. Head out for an early round of golf, then head inside for lunch. If you love strolling along the beach, take in the sunrise or sunset. When you do find yourself outdoors during midday, make a plan to access a shaded area, whether it's a beach cabana, a shady trail on your hike, or popping into an air-conditioned building to cool off.
